SunRise After-School Care Support
The SunRise After-School Care & Learner Support Facility situated at the Wapadrant Church in SunRise Road is currently open to needy children of all races in any primary school in the local community. The children however need to be referred to us by the local Social Worker at the school. At this stage we can unfortunately only provide transport for a maximum of 18 children from Laerskool Garsfontein. Other learners must thus be able to get to and from the after-school on their own every day. Services are provided by volunteers from within the community without any remuneration and are free of charge to these children. We are currently supporting 18 children at the facility referred to us by the Social Worker.
We strive to show compassion and love towards our less fortunate neighbours and thus bring harmony to our community. To bring light to the lives of those in the dark by means of Evangelisation is our primary aim.
Eighteen children from a local primary school are being cared for, free of charge, through this program. The After-School Care Centre operates from 13h00 to 17h30, from Monday to Friday, during school terms. The children were and are identified by a social worker at the school.
The children come from less fortunate and financially challenged homes. We provide these children, aged 5 to 12 years, with a balanced meal. We also provide a wholesome playing area for their enjoyment to develop social skills and build self- esteem through small group involvement. Volunteer workers assist them with their homework and offer arts and crafts, choir as well as other activities. The volunteers also engage in regular ministry activities such as teaching the Bible, giving spiritual direction and cultivating biblical values. When special needs are identified, e.g. counselling, the children and/or their parents are referred to professionals in our community who assist them free of charge. We also pay for remedial classes, occupational therapy, speech therapy and math classes, these are all funded with donations from the community.
Wapadrant Church also provides transport, free of charge, from their Primary Schools to the church premises, where the After-School is located.
We rely on donations from individuals and businesses in the local community.
SunRise After -school celebrated their 5th birthday
What a wonderfull celebration, to know that the SunRise After-school, starting from very humble beginnings celebrated it's 5th birthday in 2016. During the past 5 years we had those who said the after school will not last a year and then those who helped made it work. Thank you to every volunteer, and sponsor assisting at the after-school!! It is only thanks to your big hearts and the will of God that we are still going strong.
The after-school children and volunteers celebrated with watermelon, ice-cream and a waterslide. Everybody had lots of fun and the weather was absolutely perfect. Enjoy the pictures.
Thank you Growth-Link
On 3 March 2016 Dr Ilizanne Howard MD of Growth-Link (Growth-Link specialises in the development of both people and organisations), came to spend some time with the SunRise After shool children, and taught them about self- worth and that every child is special and unique and that in life one should love oneself and also, that each one of them have there own special path to follow and that no one has the same footprint. And for this reason we should respect other people and there uniqueness. We should remember that there is always room for positive change and that we should sometimes just press our own STOP- button before we do unnecessary harm to those who are different from us. We want to thank her for her time spent and her loving kindness.
